Why do I need the points?
Points will booste your reputation in the net community. Since asker's extra points are taken out of asker's own pocket, only with a large balance on your account, can you afford to provide more incentive for others to answer your question. And by getting more people to answer your question, you will gain information and knowledge faster.
How is this different from a message board or chat room?
This is a place for people to ask and answer Chinese learning questions in order to share their Chinese knowledge.
Unlike a chat room, this is not a place for people to ask each other personal questions like how they're doing or "talk" when they're bored. This is about knowledge, not personal stuff.
Unlike a message board, the questions here are resolved when a best answer is picked, and the community can then rate the best answer and then find the best answer for those questions. On a message board, threaded messages can continue without a resolution. It proved to be a waste of time and really hard to find a real answer when browsing those forums. You know what we are saying. It's all about knowledge sharing, and help others help yourself in Chinese learning community.
